The extraordinary experiences of three men and their fellow Marines take them from the first clash with the Japanese in the haunted jungles of Guadalcanal, through the impenetrable rain forests of Cape Gloucester, across the blasted coral strongholds of Peleliu, up the black sand terraces of Iwo Jima, through the killing fields of Okinawa, to the triumphant, yet uneasy, return home after V-J Day.

Not bad, I would say that the second disc drags a little, but if you get through that you are ok. The combat footage is well-done but the night scenes are confusing...of course night combat is confusing (or so I've read, never being within an Imperial Mile of a recruiting station myself, much less ever being in combat!)

Over the 5 discs you get to know 3 US Marines and some of the other men unit. The Marines portrayed are based on real life Marines and what transpired during their time in the Pacific. The unit is shown in the many battles against the Japanese as they island hop. Other than the fighting, they deal with the death of fellow soldiers, low food and ammo supplies and medical maladies. There is very little actual footage intermixed but the narration by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks helps smooth over thin areas.

It's very representative of a collaboration of Spielberg & Hanks. Most of what I saw, I had seen in other movies but it was still good to watch.

After watching the movie series which is superb I might add I read the book portrayed of one of the lead characters in the movie name Eugene Sledge.

I've read many books about World War 2 and Eugene Sledge's book was the most valued bringing his story from getting into the marine corp, basic training and finally off into a transport ship to a tiny island name Peleliu. Thank God I did not live in that era and be shipped off to do battle against the Japanese. These people were vicious and cruel, it was nothing short of a miracle that Eugene didn't get killed in battle as later he went to Iwo Jima.

Great movie series and excellent book you won't be disappointed.

Apple to orange comparison to Band of Brothers.
High production value & realism showed.

NOT REALISTIC. I WAS IN THE INFANTRY. DURING MY SERVICE I ONLY KNEW ONE WEAK NERD. THE SQUAD LEADERS WERE ALWAYS YELLING "SPREAD OUT". SUCH GROUPING WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ALLOWED BECAUSE OF THE DRASTICALLY INCREASED CASUALTIES THAT WOULD HAVE RESULTED.

Lovingly epic, boggles the mind.

"The Pacific" weathers the inevitable comparisons to "Band of Brothers" well, and has apparently served to launch (or relaunch) the careers of a number of decent young actors. Some episodes are more gripping than others, but well worth checking out on the whole.

The gore is intense, but that's to be expected given the nature of the Pacific war. Very moving stories, and the DVD makes you want to read the memoirs of Leckie and Sledge. It makes you realize the sacrifice that generation gave to make the world free.
