* Intriguing Martian lifeforms!

* Interesting format: sci fi, but with elements of westerns (frontier justice, gun-slinging) and Harry Potter (boys going off to boarding school, kind headmaster is replaced by an evil one that's being controlled by the government). Is J. K. Rowling a Robert Heinlein fan? :)

* An enjoyable read. This book is just fun.
