Patterson won an Edgar Award in 1977 for this book as a best first novel. I don't know who makes those evaluations and perhaps from a writer's point of view this was a great first novel...but I hardly agree. Very difficult to follow. I got through 36% of the book and gave up. I really like Patterson novels...but not this one. I have read 32 Patterson novels and I can honestly say that he got better as he wrote more books. :-)

I usually love Janes Patterson and expected this to be another good read. This book was so bad I could not finish it. I just could not get in to it. It was very confusing and so boring. It is the first James Patterson I did not enjoy enough to not finish.

If you read this book expecting the usual James Patterson page-turner you will be sorely disappointed. It's confusing and hard to grasp what's going on. I only finished it so I can mark it off my list of James Patterson books.
