A dark, quirky return to the land of Newfoundland that Howard Norman knows best. We have many of the features of his other works, such as a fascination with the names of his characters such as Romeo Gillette and Botho August and his examination of the witty eccentrics that populate the harsh landscape. A well written book about young Fabian Vas,his singular talent painting the birds of the area, his crime and his betrothal to an unknown cousin. Norman examines Fabian's inner life and chronicles his struggles. While masterfully written, not as charming as Northern Lights or as compelling as Next Life Might be Kinder. Still, a good read.
