One of Balzac's savage fairy tales of Paris, with a plain, provincial spinster as Cinderella. There are no heroes here, let alone "likeable" characters, but it is difficult not to cheer on Cousin Bette as she cuts a Richard III-like swathe through a family that pities and despises her.
