Author does a good job developing the characters. But she skipped through several parts of the story where there needed more explanation. Like how her oldest son fared after the car stealing and accident. Did he discuss with his psychiatrist? Then the author spent all these pages in the graveyard with the attendant which really didn't add to the story. I also thought the female investigator, getting that involved in the family, was not plausible.

One might think that an introvert would learn much from Beth, but her withdrawal from the world is too extreme, her thoughts too dark, her relationships too fraught, for me to take any lessons. That said, the author tells a fascinating story about families.

This was yet another in our reading project.

I've just begun my mission of trying to read all the books on Oprah's Book Club list & this was her first pick. I'm not exactly sure why. Maybe if I read as fast as she does I could feel the flow of it but because I am a relatively slow reader (thanks to my 10 month old) I didn't feel the "oomph" or the "wow" that should make a Book Club list. It started out without any profanity and then one of the author's youngest characters just started throwing it around, which wasn't totally necessary. The book was ok or just average in my humble opinion. I will see if Oprah & I have similar tastes in books as I move on to book #2 on her list.
