This film is a classic of self-indulgence (on the part of those who made it) showcasing politically correct prejudices and gross stereotyping at which people should indeed "look closer". The irony of that is probably not the intended message or an intentional source of humor. But, it is indeed fun to watch, and the performances are good.

After a middle-class father becomes bored with his mundane life, he begins to seek thrill and excitement, while also pursuing his lust for his daughter’s friend. In the meantime, his wife becomes fed up with her husband’s behavior and does thrill-seeking of her own. Worst of all, his daughter meets a new boy who begins to transform her views on everything. This award-winning film is exciting, creative, and unexpected as twist and turns will leave you wanting more. I would rate this film 5/5 stars and recommend it to thrill seekers looking for excitement of their own. @The_Reviewer of the Teen Review Board of the Hamilton Public Library

Critics be damned - American Beauty has got to be one of the most despicable depictions of male, mid-life crisis that has ever been filmed.

If Kevin Spacey's character, Lester Burnham, was supposed to actually represent an average, 42 year-old, American male in mid-life crisis, then I believe that our society, in general, is in even more trouble than I had originally thought. Burnham was, basically, nothing but a big, self-centered suck.

I was truly astounded to see just how utterly slimy that Burnham was in his day-to-day dealings with other people.

Lester Burnham, a low-life, pedophilliac bugger (who lusted like a grunting pig after 16 year-old girls), deserved the crappy job that he chose for himself at McDonalds. Being a crummy, little burger-flipper was so him.

Even though I don't condone cold-blooded murder, I certainly felt no remorse for Burnham when he was gunned down by Frank Fitts. In a sense, he bloody-well had it coming.

One can only shudder to think of how many other people's lives that Burnham would have eventually contaminated had he continued to remain alive. At the rate that he was going I'm sure that he would have inevitably resorted to exposing himself in public, or molesting very young children, or something as equally vile as that.

I find it very-very peculiar, indeed, that American Beauty actually struck such a unanimously positive chord with a vast number of the movie-going public. I guess that these many viewers must've strongly identified with the screwed-up characters and off-kilter situations that were presented in this movie. I surely didn't feel that way.

All-in-all, I certainly saw nothing in American Beauty that even slightly resembled that of "beauty" (above or below the surface). It was all looking pretty ugly to me..... What more can I say?

An excellent debut film by British director Sam Mendes. the story is about the three members of a dysfunctional family, and their neighbours and friends. Due to the subject matter, it may not be everyone's cup of tea. But I find it very well acted and enjoyable to watch.

An okay film - not for everyone.

Lester Burnham: Remember those posters that said, "Today is the first day of the rest of your life"? Well, that's true of every day but one - the day you die.
