The movie was trying to do too much to prove a point about the the dark and loathsome nature of Douglas' character (and ends up saying that if you make great films, you get a pass. ) it starts off with his infidelity to his wife, which comes out of left field and was a race to the finish from that point on. The same picture can be seen in the behavior of some if not all of today's movie moguls. Perhaps a movie should be made based on the book "Hollywood Babylon" by Kenneth Anger.
Timeless piece on Hollywood film making.
This film is all beautiful, no bad, and comes with a superior special extra on the life and extraordinary times of Lana Turner. Her life, her many men who often turned out to be wretches, told by daughter in a poignant way, makes this edition the one to get. This story is as remarkable as the movie.
Director Vincent Minnelli made cinema history. He takes a story about a washed up Hollywood producer, and shows the lengths he will go to, in his drive for a hit movie. It is like turing the camera around and filming the producer, director, stars and crew filming a movie. We are helped with wonderful performances from Kirk Douglas, Lana Turner, Walter Pidgeon, Barry Sullivan, and Leo G. Carroll. I love watching the inside of Hollywood. There is such a rich story of characters. The competing egos is enough to halt productions. "The Bad and The Beautiful" shows us a slice of Hollywood. The director and producer always seem to battle the studio to get the picture made the way they want it.
An ode to old-time producers and studio executives, who, despite their many faults, loved the movies. A mix of melodrama, comedy, and a judicious amount of truth.
