Add a CommentEngaging time-travel yarn of H.G.Wells chasing Jack the Ripper into the future with his time machine. Mary Steenburgen gives a career-making performance as Wells' modern American girlfriend and ally. Unfortunately there are some loopholes in the plot, but this is inevitable in time travel.
Great film . Been watching it on cable since a kid. Good afternoon 70s fun. A early example of post modern literary revisionism so common today in films involving time travel and real life famous historical characters fictionalized into a new story. Good stuff
I remember wanting to see this movie since I was a little kid as the idea of Jack the Ripper vs. H. G. Wells being a great story idea. Having seen it now, I understand why it warranted it's R rating back in the day. It wasn't as much my cup of tea as I thought it would have been.
Basically boy meets girl film, with the addition of HG Wells science fiction, starring Malcolm McDowell in his first American film, in which he met his future bride Mary Steenburgen. This film proved that McDowell could act in romantic comedy, but he soon became somewhat typecast as the ruthless, clever bad guy. I was shocked at how may different films and TV credits he has for a guy who almost wrecked his career with drug and alcohol addiction.
I enjoyed this movie! Great movie.
I'll go against the flow of the comments so far and say I did not think this was all that great a movie. You''re not watching it for the almost non-existent special effects. Maybe one could do something with the overall story concept but the story line is predictable. The acting is so-so. The characters are shallow. The whole thing feels very 1970s-ish, hasn't aged well and felt like watching an early Dr. Who episode. This is one of the few movies where halfway through I started fast-forwarding through segments.
I just found out they're making a TV series based on this movie! I'll definitely be doing a podcast for it.
If you think it is impossible for a time travel movie to be without plot holes, this is one to see. In addition to an exciting story, a charming romance, and some deft social observation, Time After Time shatters the genre by having all of its characters behave sensibly and with motivation. There are few films I would describe as "delightful", but this is one.
Underrated movie that worked in plot than special effects.
I heard this movie recommended on a "Must-See Time-Travel Movie" piece, but I was quite disappointed. It was cheesy, and predictable.
