Opinion

From Library Staff

In 1969, the Cockettes started bringing their colorful, outrageous and psychedelic gender party to the stage. They continue to be an influential and beloved part of San Francisco's drag history.

Documentary about Haight-Ashbury's psychedelic theater troupe. Herb Caen, a longtime fan of the North Beach drag scene, touted the Cockettes' gender-bending chaos in his column.

I was in the audience at the Palace in '70 and '71 and saw all their performances which I loved. I know the film's director David Weismann and Cockettes Pam, Scrumb and Rumi. It was a magical time for SF and this film captures the magic.

I was lucky enough to live in SF in the early 70's and saw one of the last performances of the Cockettes at the Palace. As fabulous as this film is as a chronicle of the talented theater troupe, it's also the film that most authentically captures the spirit of that time in SF. I recommend it to anyone who wants an insight into what many of us old hippies miss about the SF that was, and also a glimpse of what a true "sharing economy" looks like.
