From Library Staff

This was "Nolan's first foray into the superhero realm." Christian Bale, Liam Neeson, and Katie Holmes star in this 2005 film.

Off to a good start explaining his origins the story begins to lose traction as the plot develops holes. The wheels first design of the tumbler makes for an improbable battering ram capable of driving through walls/barricades. The vehicles stealth mode appeared to make no visual difference on screen. While clearly visible the spotlight that was fixed on it merely drifts away, but is otherwise plainly obvious. While the tumbler's flaws are forgivably trivial, the villian's evil plot is overly complicated solely for dramatic effect, as if destroying an entire city by simpler means is not dramatic enough. Is the mind altering substance that no one but them has ever heard of that they nefariously smuggled in even illegal and restricted, and in need of such delivery methods. Surely there are much simpler and more fool proof means of carrying out such a plot. I expect more from an ancient organization responsible for millenias of the downfall/cleansings of the world's most corrupted cities, including Ancient Rome. During their evil plot planning sessions didn't anyone propose more feasible alternatives or were they all determined to make things more difficult than necessary for the fun of it. If so, some self deprecating humor would have gone a long way. While this genre calls for some suspension of disbelief, reason and logic are still appreciated within the realm of fantasy. Unless the film acknowledges and embraces this aspect it doesn't work. Simply overlooking its shortcomings and expecting the audience to too is the difference between laughing at or laughing with the film. That aside, the many story lines come full circle and tie up nicely. Hilarious ending when Ms. Dawes seems to warm up to her old playmate, but ultimately wants to be just friends. Hilarious, because this is the most reasonable aspect of the film and a bit unexpected. Good for her getting his hopes up and them turning down the Batman. Ha!

First installment of the best live-action Batman (only "Mask of the Phantasm" and "The Dark Knight" are better Batman films, IMO).

We really enjoyed the movie had all the ingredients needed to keep ones interest. Has humor, action, good plot, visuals, dialogue, conflict, and of course a good looking leading man and women. The shape of water, which was very good got the best movie award in 2018 and I would score this move a close second. As I remember it was nominated for best Cinematography and I can see why, it was great.

Christian Bale is still my favorite Batman. Sorry, Michael Keaton!

Oh, I forgot that I have a pathological aversion to Michael Caine! Ruins a lot of good Batman Movies for me. Go back to stuffyland, Michael!

Starts from the beginning about where the batman came from. Engaging,"You don't want the tumbler."

Liam Neeson is about the meanest martial arts mentor I've ever seen none of this Grasshopper stuff. I'm a big fan of the classic comics and I much prefer the 1939 Batman. In the very first Batman origins story Bruce uses barbells to become so strong no broadswords involved. It doesn't mention Bruce going anywhere; but since it does say he studied Jujitsu possibly he went to Japan.
My biggest criticism of this movie is that Bruce's mother really should have been given more lines; she just smiles approvingly while his dad imparts some the Wayne wisdom upon him.
