Perhaps no other person has done more to bring mindfulness meditation into the contemporary landscape of America than Jon Kabat-Zinn. Through a number of research studies, and through Kabat-Zinn's pioneering work at the University of Massachusetts Medical School where he is founder of its world-renowned Stress Reduction Clinic, mindfulness is finally being recognized as a highly effective tool for dealing with stress, chronic pain, and other illnesses.

Now with this four-part home training course, Jon Kabat-Zinn offers listeners the definitive mindfulness meditation practice on CD. We are not trying to actively achieve a state of deep relaxation-or any other state for that matter-while practicing mindfulness, he teaches. But interestingly, by opening to an awareness of how things actually are in the present moment, we often taste very deep states of relaxation and well-being of both body and mind.

Course objectives:

Utilize body and mind meditations in daily practice Practice mindful yoga with clear, safe and simple instructions Describe the basic state of being which is present awareness Compare the results of unmoving, sitting meditation to a movement meditation such as mindful yoga Join the bestselling author of Coming to Our Senses (Hyperion, 2005) and Wherever You Go, There You Are (Hyperion 1995) to develop and deepen your personal mindfulness practice, and to taste the universal aspects of stillness, clarity, wisdom, compassion, and well-being that Guided Mindfulness Meditation offers.

These four CDs contain all of the audio files recommended by the author Jon Kabat-Zinn in his book "Full Catastrophe Living" for those who want to get started with mindfulness meditation on their own at home.

Jon Kabat-Zinn's book is recommended by Tim Burnett of Mindfulness Northwest. Tim says Kabat-Zinn's Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction course that he created decades ago is the basis for the 8 week program Mindfulness Northwest offers periodically. Since Mindfulness Northwest didn't have an 8 week program going when I first became interested in taking up meditation, I found the Full Catastrophe Living book in the library and bought the audio tapes from Kabat-Zinn. Had I known the library had these CDs with these audio files I could have tried them out before buying. I didn't regret studying meditation using Kabat-Zinn's method.

My doctor recommended Mindfulness Northwest when I told her I wasn't going to follow my cardiologists recommendation that I start taking what I saw as a very dangerous drug as a treatment for my highly symptomatic atrial fibrillation. Prior to starting meditating my heart was not functioning properly some 30% of the time for an entire month. After starting meditation my heart symptoms only appeared for a few hours for the next entire month.

If you experience any problem aggravated or triggered by the way you presently cope with stress you may find that the insight you gain by practicing the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction techniques will help.

The first cd has a 40 minutes body scan meditation. I had been practicing mindfulness by listening to guided meditations and, for me, using this first cd allowed me to advance to the next level. I have been listening to it for about a month and I look forward to the awareness body scan every morning. I get the thing about his voice but have gotten used to it. To me, the other 3 disks are not as good and have lots of silence spaces but I will try them again.

Not for everyone. As some have said, his voice is annoying. Sorry, I'm being judgmental.

These CDs can be used in tandem with the book "Full Catastrophe Living" to develop one's own eight week mindfullness program.
