I wanted another book paced like the first in the series; not realistic, when Novik is creating alternative history of the Napoleonic War of the Fourth Coalition in superb detail. I'll re-read this in the future, as Novik is a stellar writer.

Some brilliant insights into politics, personal responsibility, ethics, and friendship. Faces the problems of slavery a little more "head on" than book 2. Couldn't put it down.

I enjoyed this one much better than the second. The plot was more developed and it held my interest the whole way through. I did find it a little hard to believe that Termeraire could carry 300 men at one time, but I'll let it slide.

You may find, after finishing this book, that you have been holding your breath since somewhere around the halfway mark.

I was, anyway. This is good stuff, and one very nearly forgets that there were no dragons involved in the Napoleonic Wars.
