Tells the story about the US Marines who fought and raised the American flag atop Mount Sirabachi on Iwo Jima island near Japan in WW2 as the Japanese was losing the war. During a bloody battle; what happened to them, the American public relations that swirled around them afterwards, the legends, and how they were portrayed later and adjusted in civilian life.

I have a friend who has Atention Deficit Disorder, and he is more focused than this film. All over the place, the film seems afraid to pick a storyline and develop it. The characters are boring and forgettable, the cinematography is ugly to look at, and can't stay focused for longer than 10 minutes. I love Clint Eastwood and Steven Spielberg, but they were given such a messy script to work with, and ruin a story I really want to hear. Overall, I deem this huge disappointment a Saving Private Ryan knockoff that is worth a pass.

Very touching movie. I felt so sorry for the soldiers especially the ones that survived. Ira Hayes was definitely suffering from severe PTSD. Adam Beach played Hayey's character very well. His emotions were so real, even his tears.

I selected this film primarily as an Eastwood film that I had never seen, but I agree with another's sentiment that it misses the mark -- not one of his best.

Because it is Eastwood, film is beautifully shot and backed by soulful music. Nice message, not much momentum, not one of his best films.

I dislike Clint's politics but I love his movies. Eastwood is a masterful filmmaker telling compelling stories of unusual topics and perspectives. No sugar coating. No rah-rah-USA nonsense. Great acting, cinematography, and direction. Fine screenwriting and art direction. See this film. Note: I watched this film immediately before it's sibling film Letters from Iwo Jima. Eastwood made them back-to-back.

This is a 2006 American war film based on the book of the same name written by James Bradley and Ron Powers about the 1945 Battle of Iwo Jima,
the five Marines and one Navy Corpsman who were involved in raising the flag on Iwo Jima, and the aftereffects of that event on their lives.
This film is taken from the American viewpoint of the Battle for Iwo Jima, while the sequel "Letters from Iwo Jima" is from the Japanese viewpoint
of the battle.
Clint Eastwood directed two Iwo Jima films back to back.
No wonder the amazingly realistic battle scenes are quite identical in both films.

The film loses momentum and interest after the Battle for Iwo Jima is depicted. Of this and Letters from Iwo Jima, Letters is stronger in areas such as emotional impact, acting, and interest.

Letters from Iwo Jima was amazing! Saving Private Ryan, also amazing! And Flags of Our Fathers, amazing!

Letters from Iwo Jima was a brilliant film. This companion film is less so--acting is excellent, but the film seems choppy. That said, good treatment of the true story behind the Iwo Jima service men and the controversy surrounding the famous photo.
