An exciting hero fantasy for middle grade readers, based on Native American shape shifter legends. If your children like reading stories with super heroes, give them this one for some different cultural references. In a reverse of the usual shape-shifting story, Wabi is born as an owl. It turns out that two of his ancestors were humans who desired to become owls and lived their lives that way. Wabi becomes the protector of a nearby tribal village and falls in love with one of the young women. He changes to human in form, with abilities that are beyond human, but is rejected by the village for his strange ways. Even so, he does battle with several non-human monsters to save the village. This could be clunky and clichéd but it is not, thanks to Bruchac’s skill as a writer and his deep knowledge of Native American folklore. Bruchac is of Abenaki heritage, along with English and Slovak.
