In real life police work, there usually are many more wrong leads than right leads. And in this film there are plenty of false leads. Maybe a lot of viewers will be disgruntled because they cannot follow exactly what is going on. But then again, this is the type of film where one can enjoy watching it again after giving it a rest for awhile. This was based upon a crime novel by the Swedish writer Per Wahloo, creator of the Beck novels made into a TV crimes series that is now showing up in American libraries, but this film is set in San Francisco with American detectives played by Walter Matthau and Bruce Dern.
