Haunting. Nothing like the first book. Highly recommended, but I warn you: it does get disturbing.

Wild ride through Yale and New Haven in the Kennedy era as seen through the eyes of an aspiring advertising artist. Kidd writes outrageously funny office satire, but he's also stalking bigger game: his hero tries to find what prompted a friend's suicide by taking part in an experiment she underwent at the university and nearly ends up following her to the grave. In the placid conformity he has grown up in, and in his own unexamined soul, the hero finds something sinister and repulsive. Kidd balances the comedy and the serious matter nicely, but sometimes there's a cut-and-paste feel to the plot, as if it were written in sections and tacked together. But the dialogue is stylish and the descriptions laugh-out-loud funny.
Kidd, a noted book designer also teaches a lot about graphics in this enjoyable novel.
