Sequence, symbolism and predictability of the story-line didn't dent the appreciation of beautiful acting. This movie is valuable as artistic mirror of Russian social, political, cultural and legal aspects.

The film is somewhat similar to 12 angry men. I like it a lot, because each character has a story that portrays life in today's Russia. Moreover, it shows the power of stereotypes and overcoming it by questioning their face value.
Great actors and captivating storyline make 2 h 40 min go by quickly.

held my attention for 2 hours and 40 minutes and I was wishing there were special features. great peek at Russian men of a certain age and their response to the social challenges of a changing Russian society. their individual stories were both fascinatingly Russian and relevant.

Difficult for me to read the subtitles, watch the action, follow the jumping in time. Believable characters.

Overall I enjoyed this movie. Acting was excellent, could easily cut out an hour of this movie, too long at times. Very interesting look into Russian attitudes and stereotypes.

Aug 22, 2012.....Wow. I wasn't expecting this to be so good.....the acting, the cinematography, the subject, the graphics, the suspense.....this movie has it all. Yes, it is a little long, and I was too tired to watch it, but I couldn't drag my eyes away. I wish there were more movies like this one. I'm tired of the fast fights and smash ups that are supposed to give you thrills in the movies these days. They just bore me. I'll be watching this again......and then maybe again. So much good stuff, I'm sure I'm missing lots. Did I mention I love the actors? No glitz and glam here!.....I've never watched the other movie, that this one takes after, I bet it is not 1/2 as good. Will check it out......oh! just checked it out.....I have seen that movie, many many years ago. I think I was a teenager! I think it was an afternoon matinee on TV. I'll have to watch it again and compare the two. Libraries Rock!

Excellent, suspenseful, thoughtful, well-acted. Also, a small glimpse into the social prejudice against Chechens.
You will be thinking about this film long afterward and considering the ethical and psychological issues it raises.

No secret that this follows the United States Classic "12 Angry Men" as that movie is acknowledged in the opening credits of 12. However, an adult viewer catches frequent glimpses of Russian values and attitudes concerning a variety of subjects that one is hard pressed to find elsewhere in English subtitles. Stark graphics throughout, the ending scene will not soon be forgotten. Atypical ending for any Soviet or Russian film seen before.

Absolutely mesmerizing and so well done it is breathtaking. Superb acting, especially by the accused Chechen and the jury foreman. Music is haunting; some very funny bits (the bird is the best); and a very satisfying ending. A level of moral and philosophical depth so far removed from the garbage that Hollywood typically spews out. A rare masterpiece.
