A collection of stories that delve into the experiences of Chinese immigrants in America. A lonely composer takes comfort in the songs of his girlfriend's parakeet; a group of young children declare their wish to change their names so that they might sound more "American," unaware of how deeply this will sadden their grandparents; a Chinese professor of English attempts to defect with the help of a reluctant former student.

This book of short stories describes the lives of Chinese immigrants living in and about Flushing New York. Most of the stories are mildly interesting. The more interesting ones, including the title story, are towards the end. In some cases the language is so spare that it borders on juvenile. This collection does not compare well with Jhumpa Lahiri's "Interpreter of Maladies" describing the Indian immigrant experience.

Interesting and often unexpected. Likeable characters. I think I prefer novels, because once I get to know the characters, I'd like to stay with them. Well-written.
