Fans of slasher films may well be disappointed in this early slasher classic from 1974 as it's somewhat slowly paced and restrained in terms of its killings. Clearly the director is going more for suspense and tension than gore. Set at a sorority house that keeps getting obscene phone calls (this is one of the first uses of the "It's coming for inside the house!" device), the girls get slowly dispatched by an unseen maniac. Bava, Argento and "Psycho" had laid out the slasher template, but this is important in using young women as the heroines/victims and the p.o.v. killer camera ("Halloween" would also use this). Lois Lane and Juliet are the two female leads. Some might find the ending frustrating, but I liked it. Director Bob Clark would do a very different Christmas movie in the 80s, "A Christmas Story." A good double feature with "Silent Night, Deadly Night."

This is a decent horror film featuring some of my favorite actors, and it is certainly a horror classic but falls flat to my 2012 spoiled eyes. I guess back in 1974 this film was scary, at least it had a lot of Hitchcock influence. Nowadays, well...apart from the classic camerawork and a cult following, it's still watchable. I feel that I am on the fence with this one, so I'm just going to give it an average grade. It was great to see Olivia Hussey and Margot Kidder star in it though!
