Opinion
From Library Staff
"Charming... This book should appeal to tweens looking for a story that reflects their fears and experiences and gives them hope that things get easier." --Publishers Weekly
Telgemeier has created an utterly charming graphic memoir of tooth trauma, first crushes and fickle friends, sweetly reminiscent of Judy Blume's work.

Comment
Add a CommentIt's really good. Really, really, really good. This may be the best comic you read the whole year. I don't really think about age limits for this book. In my opinion, if you want Raina's comic, then you get it. As long as you can read, you read it. No swearing, no creepy scenes, no dark views, so read it. You're looking for a comic, read this one.
This was a light read about the challenges of teenage life, enjoyed the read.
I highly recommend this graphic novel for grades 5 and up. Though the main character is in junior high and then high school, there really isn't anything objectionable in the text that would make me inclined to caution younger readers. In this debut autobiographical graphic novel, the author takes us through her tooth-related struggles.
This is a great coming-of-age story and a MUST for any kids who are about to get braces. I had braces for 5 years and wish this book had existed back then. You/your child WILL want to reach the rest of the author's works, so be sure to put them on hold as they remain popular - and rightfully so!
This graphic novel tells us the coming of age story of the author, Raina, a girl who isn’t quite sure where she belongs, through cute pictures and simple dialogue. We go on a journey of self discovery with Raina as she goes through middle school and high school. She makes mistakes along the way, but she realises what makes her happy and who she wants to be around. It’s entertaining and fun to read and it also manages to convey deep emotions and morals.
An absolute delight. I had braces as an adult and can totally relate to the trials and tribulations of orthodontia. I am glad I did not have to wear them in combination with middle school and the early years of high school. Raina Telgemeier has a gift for telling her story and the graphics add a new level to the experience that would not be possible with a narrative only product. Thank you, Raina, for sharing your life with us and giving us all the reminder to hang in there and smile.
Smile is a wonderful graphic novel about friendship and identity. This is a great read, especially if you're looking for a laugh!
I LOVE THIS BOOK SOOO MUCH
Smile is an enjoyable comic for girls of all ages in my opinion. I found the main character to be very relatable as she deals bullies and has a hard time fitting in like most girls in school usually find themselves having trouble with. The main character is more relatable to those who enjoy childhood and don’t want to grow up right away but always feel pressured by their classmates to grow up quicker than they want which is a big problem most little girls are faced with and if this book sounds like you then you’ll certainly enjoy it and be happy with the ending. I especially recommend it to those who enjoy reading graphic novels aka comic books. 4 stars
