Fiction about scientists always interests me, because there is so often a cool, analytical tone to the writing. This debut novel is like that, its main character a neurologist trying to make sense of his wife's recent death by examining their shared and differing memories. His friends and family routinely accuse him of "not listening", he's sure that he is, but he's not getting the emotional meaning even when he hears the words. A vivid Maine island setting and lively subsidiary characters such as an acerbic great-aunt and a dreadlocked god-daughter add to the depth of the novel.
