While The Debba is promoted as a murder mystery, Avner Mandelman uses the novel as a club to hammer home his simplistic view of the Arab-Israeli conflict. His view can be summed up as: Arab good, Israel bad. On page after page the reader is subjected to Mandelman's characters spewing out half truths and distortions all of which reconfirm Mandelman's one-sided view. Better novels that use the Arab-Israeli conflict as a backdrop exist. Don't waste your time on this one.
