While many feel that Hugh Hefner standardized objectification of women as sex objects through his Playboy empire, that is only part of his story and this documentary details some of the other aspects of his life which includes championing First Amendment rights (which also dovetails his interest in the legality of maintaining a livelihood based on photos of naked women) and civil rights in allowing African-Americans to perform in his clubs and TV show at a time when many weren't allowed in the same building as white people.

In many respects, Hefner was instrumental in taking away some of the stigma and ignorance about sex in American life.

"To objectify women, or to not objectify women" - Is this the question one asks of Mr. Hugh Hefner, the ultimate, most-admired playboy of them all?

For the most part - This well-researched, bio-documentary, chronicling the mega-success of Hugh Hefner (born 1926) (and his very "naughty-but-nice" men's magazine, Playboy), was a really intriguing look at an iconic pop culture figure who has certainly had his fair share of controversial highs and lows.

The first hour of this documentary was, of course, the best. It diligently covered the first 20 years (1953-1973) of astounding success for Playboy magazine - A truly phenomenal magazine that was specifically geared to the hip, swinging bachelor (who apparently lurks inside most men).

Competently directed by Canadian film-maker, Brigitte Berman, this enjoyable documentary not only featured lots of excellent vintage footage, and interviews with scores of celebrities, but Hugh Hefner, himself (82 at the time and clearly on his best behaviour) offered the viewer the "real" story behind the money, the power, and, yes, the sex of Playboy magazine.

PBS has done it again very well done documentary. This movie was interesting, informative, and worse seeing!! I recommend this movie for all to see. Well worth the price of admission to any theater.

This was quite interesting, but completely ignored how far Hefner has come from being an activist or a rebel in his present-day self. Ditto how out of touch he is with reality today.
