Unbelievably opulent interiors that photographed beautifully but were surely unliveable. Maugham 'popularised' the all- white look - if something that must have required fleets of servants could really be popularised. She designed an all-white set for a Jean Harlow film that required 11 shades of white to create enough contrast. Was Harlow's hair one on the 11 shades I wonder. The photographs reward close examination, especially the ones that feature people (or remarkable facsimiles of people).
