A taut, suspenseful, assured literary debut that explores the dark side of desire and ambition through one woman's calculated entry into an elite world and a destiny of her own design.

A SUSPENSEFUL, ASSURED L ITERARY DEBUT THAT EXPLORES THE DARK SIDE OF DESIRE AND AMBITION THROUGH ONE WOMAN' S UNLIKELY ENTRY INTO A N ELITE WORLD AND A DESTINY OF HER OWN DESIGN

ON A BITTER WINTER' S NIGHT, Frances Thorpe comes upon the aftermath of a car crash and, while comforting the dying driver, Alys Kyte, hears her final words. The wife of a celebrated novelist, Alys moved in rarefied circles, and when Frances agrees to meet the bereaved family, she glimpses a world entirely foreign to her: cultured, wealthy, and privileged. While slowly forging a friendship with Alys's carelessly charismatic daughter, Frances finds her own life takes a dramatic turn, propelling her from an anonymous existence as an assistant editor for the books section of a newspaper to the dizzying heights of literary society.

With her unforgettable protagonist, author Harriet Lane draws readers into a tightly paced tale that careens towards an audacious ending. Transfixing, insightful, and unsettling, Alys, Always drops us into the mind of an enigmatic young woman whose perspective on a glamorous world also shines a light on those on the outside who would risk all to become part of it.

This is another example where I feel the critics read a different book. This book is not gripping or chilling or that interesting. I kept waiting for something to happen and it never did. One woman dies, one lies and then she gets a boyfriend. I had no reason to like this character at all.

While on her way home one night, newspaper editor Frances Thorpe stops at the scene of a car crash and witnesses the last moments of a dying woman. Wanting to offer comfort to the woman's loved ones, and having learned that the husband left behind is none other than literary legend Laurence Kyte, a famous novelist who travels in the highest of England's social circles, Frances visits the family. Whether what happens next is accidental or carefully planned is for you to figure out, but nevertheless, Frances has much to gain from her new association with the Kyte family. "This is a gem," enthuses Kirkus Reviews of this novel, which "bewitches with its undertones of implied meanings and carefully hidden secrets." Fiction A to Z newsletter January 2013.

A suspenseful, All About Eve type story in which an ambitious editor insinuates herself into a famous author's family. An often disturbing page-turner, it also offers an insider's look at Britain's literary scene. (The author is a former editor at the Tatler and the Observer.) LauraADPPL/WeAreSpartacus.
