I took this book on the recommendation of the library website because it seemed an unusual departure from the norm, which I'm always searching for. I should have known better when it was immersed among all the murder mystery/romance novels making up the most popular title list. Yikes! Here I thought I was going to read something different from the usual fare of formulaic offerings representing a mixture of murder mysteries heavily laced with sappy love scenes when what did I get? A combination of a murder mystery interspersed with way too many sappy and corny love scenes, with unbelievable characters like a coroner girlfriend who can immediately shake off being kidnapped and almost killed and wanting to make love right after being rescued. Yeah right! So although I know nothing about this author, his modus operandi is now clear - write trash demanded by much of the marketplace. Although the plot is unusual enough with some clever writing sparsely interspersed, I just couldn't stomach the formulaic drivel! If I could have given it zero stars I would have, so it gets half a star. Anyone looking for well-written literature, stay away from this one.

I picked up this book because of the title and cover (the monkey was staring at me). It turned out to be pretty good, an entertaining murder mystery involving a severed arm that is fished out of the ocean by a tourist. The monkey was my least favorite element of the book, but the rest was good.

Very engaging and fast paced plot with surprising twists.
Informative details included about Medicare and Florida. A good read that is both easy and informative at the same time. Highly recommended for those who enjoy satire in the context of a murder mystery.

I am enjoying the first couple of chapters...funny book.

I loved this book. I've read a few of Carl Hiaasen's books, and he never seems to disappoint when it comes to plot and humour. His are the kinds of books that you regret finishing -- you don't want the fun to end. Bad Monkey was no exception.
One thing that irked me, however, was his rendition of a Bahamian dialect. It was inconsistent and felt false, on the verge of being offensive. Writing in dialect can be tricky, and if a writer can't do it extremely well (and authentically), it's better not done at all. On this point I was disappointed, as it slowed down reading as I tried to decipher what the characters were saying.
On the whole, though, Bad Monkey is a wacky and enjoyable read.

I am a Snowbird. So I love reading funny stories about Florida. This one was great. Many great characters and a nice detective mystery. I plan on reading all of the Carl Hiassen books in the near future.

I've read many many Hiaasen's books. But this one is the worst, I mean the worst I've ever read. The magic's not there any more. I just felt I was swimming in molasses. There are too many characters and they are not well define. It's just that the story is spread so thin for so long that it just became no fun to read anymore. It felt like he relished being stuck into this mediocrity and went 200 pages too long. And, really, the best character is the monkey.

Selected this book on the basis of an interview with the author on NPR. I'm not familiar with his earlier books. Had some funny moments, but at the half-way mark, I lost interest in the story and the characters. I concur with LT's point about the author's near stereotyping of Bahamians. Returned it without finishing it.
