This stirring and poetic depiction of a feud between two rival medieval clans is a fierce, epic, and meticulously designed evocation of the clashes between Christianity and Pagansim, humankind and nature, and love and violence.

Opinion

From Library Staff

Surrealistic, expressionistic, chaotic, and compelling, this stunningly photographed film portrays the violent feuding of medieval Czech and German tribes with documentary-like immediacy.

A confusing, confounding, unsettling, and astonishing film. The visuals are mesmerizing, the music is almost hypnotic, and the two together make for a haunting film (I mean that literally for I did have nightmares with its images and sounds in them). The narrative is hard to pin down; sorting out who is who, and where things are; it requires some effort to comprehend.

Great 1967 b&w Czech historical clan battle epic. Amazing widescreen cinematography and fabulous costuming.

This is is a Czechoslovak historical drama directed by František Vláčil, adapted from the novel of the same name published in 1931 by Vladislav Vančura.
It tells the story of a daughter of a feudal lord who is kidnapped by neighbouring robber knights and becomes a mistress of one of them.
The DVD cover says that it re-created the textures and mentalities of a long-ago way of life, rather than to make a conventional historical drama, and that the result is dazzling.
I viewed Party One, but it was so boring that I quit watching.

A stunning film. An evocation of medieval Europe like no other. We always see movies set in England or France, so it is a thrill to see the medieval world from another perspective (Middle Europe). The soundtrack audio treatment, heavy with echo, is daunting at first, but soon acts like a vehicle to pull you into the cinematic environment. Magdaléna Vášáryová is not only an amazing young actress, she is lovely in an ethereal, indescribable way. The entire cast amazes in this production. See the features disc for the fascinating background on how this great film was made.

poetic and brutal - an imagined 13th century saga in black and white supported by the music. to be felt, not understood. a major investment of time with excellent special features. comparable to Tarkovsy's Andrei Rublev.

This film is one of the greatest masterpieces of world cinema, an otherworldly look at the confusion, brutality and spirituality of the dark ages.

It's incredibly hard to follow despite its straightforward plot, but just allow the atmosphere and sublime beauty take hold of you.
