Imagine birthing your baby exactly the way you would like -- quietly and peacefully in a dimly lit room in absolute control of your labour and birth, feeling safe and supported. A doula can help you achieve this. Doulas are trained to look after you, both emotionally and physically, during pregnancy, labour and birthing. They empower you to negotiate the best care for you and your baby. They act as your advocate, steering you and your partner through the sometimes daunting hospital system. Or if you have chosen to have your baby at a birth centre or at home, your doula will be with you and your partner providing support, reassurance and encouragement. This book will discuss what a difference a doula can make.

While this book offers a decent amount of good information, I find the author's comments about doulas in the US unfair and not accurate of all American doulas (pages 30-31). Her observations on doulas in NY may be correct (I really do not know) but as a doula serving in Northern Virginia I would prefer not to be lumped in with her opinion. I offer services for women who want a natural course of labor and for those who also opt for epidurals. I feel her comments could be misleading to women in the US who are looking for more information about doula care. Please take her opinions of American doulas with a grain of salt!
