I enjoyed all 5 seasons of this historical fiction series centered around the building of the transcontinental railroad. Although the main character, Cullen Bohannon, is violent at times he also has a big heart and is a man of integrity and honor. Lots of good supporting characters in the cast as well. Christopher Heyerdahl is excellent as the villainous "Swede." You will hate him with a passion. Some of the characters are based on real people. Thomas Durant, Eva, and Governor Campbell were all real people. Bohannon's character is based on General John Casement.

Feb 11-12....After episodes 1 and 2.....enticing......Feb 15, after episode 5, I'm finding it a little.....phoney? I'm not sure what it is, the acting? I just cannot sink into it, and I'm too aware that I'm watching. I must say the eye candy in episode 5 during the fight was great! I loved the chicken at the end as well. Buck a...buck a...buck buck! We'll see how I feel after a few more episodes......note: I thought the scenery was familiar, did a little research and yes!.....it was shot in my neck of the woods! That's kind of exciting. Love this country and the aspens are one of my favourite trees.....another note: did anyone else notice that the sun rose and set over the same trees?....Duh!........Feb 25 episode 6, still not into it. Is it the music making it so unreal? or is it the way they talk? It seems so scripted........Mar 1 just finishing episode 8, still feel the same, but enjoying the landscape. Lots of wild bergamot and wolf willows in these episodes. I'm just finding it too hard to believe, and jumpy, too much left out between scenes. Still great eye candy though.

The first two seasons are the best of the four to date. The flashbacks, which are usually the weaker segments in television series, were powerful. Thor Gundersen as portrayed by Christopher Heyerdahl is by far the most compelling villain on film or television presently.

This is one of the best tv series of all time. Very historically accurate yet up-to-date. This is the roller coaster of current tv. My tummy rumbles at every episode.

I enjoyed this series from the start, but as it went on I grew to enjoy it more and more. It looks great (not as perfect as Deadwood, but it looks very authentic and the scenery was awesome) and the acting ranged from decent to very good. Anson Mount played the bada$$ anti-hero outlaw to a tee. Common and Tom Noonan played the freed slave and railroad tycoon very well, too. The story is relatively straightforward, but it's told well.

Set in 1865 after the end of the Civil War Hell on Wheels is the moving encampment for Union Pacific workers building the transcontinental railroad. The main character is a former Confederate soldier seeking revenge on the Union soldiers who killed his wife and son. Living and working in the midwest plains is a host of others including Irishmen, former slaves, whores as well as the cut bosses and security personel. Besides the hard work and harsh conditions they all must deal with hostile American Indians. The first season of Hell on Wheels has a realistic and gritty tone. There is plenty of action in this well done western drama.

Soon after the civil war, a wheeler-dealer pioneer, a tortured priest, a out for revenge Southern soldier, a high yellow black man, a strong willed wife of a surveyor, a bunch of Irish bosses and ex-slaves formed a community to build the East of the Rocky transcontinental railway. And there were the usual conflicts with the native Indians, pleasure women, greedy politicians ...
It is a good series with excellent camera work and "some" wonderful acting, but a par below the "Justified" in mho.

AMC has another first-rate series on their hands to go with Breaking Bad. Elite broadcasters such HBO & FX make room for a blue-collar channel. Plans are to wrap up Breaking Bad with season 6 so I don't think viewers of this gritty western will be left "high and dry" midseason/series as with Deadwood, another great series focusing on the States' appropriation of the West in the 1860's-'70's.
