Renato and Albin are a middle-aged couple, who are the managers and star performers at a glitzy drag club in St. Tropez, agree to hide their sexual identities, along with their flamboyant personalities and home decor, when the parents of Renato's son's fiancě come for a visit. But with its hilarious performances and ahead-of-its-time social message, there's nothing like the audacious, dazzling original movie.

A classic, a gem, and one of my all time favorite movies! The screenplay and performances are brilliant. It is poignant, touching, sad, and very, very funny! I have seen this film at least four times, and I never grow tired of it. In fact, I appreciate it more as I grow older. ("The Birdcage" pales in comparison.)

If you saw "The Birdcage," then you saw the American remake of the French-Italian film "La Cage Aux Folles." The remake is amusing and well-acted, but the original is fizzier, Frenchier, and more daring, considering it came out in the 70s when gay culture was still at the margins. The remake is almost too faithful to the original, which still retains much of its buoyancy and humor. Spawned a sequel and a musical. Music by the great Ennio Morricone.

Entertaining but mostly forgettable, a bit like an extended episode of a poorly-paced sitcom that halts and jerks from plot point to revelation with almost no grace whatsoever. It does have its charms, a lot of the gags are pretty good and the plot is foolproofedly farcical (it's easy to see why the stage version ran for so long), but the polish of later adaptations make it look even dingier.

Something of a cult classic. A French farce later redone for English audiences as "The Birdcage".

La Cage aux Folles (1978) 110 min. This is the original French version of the film "The Birdcage (1996)".which starred Robin Williams and Nathan Lane. Very funny picture by French director Eduard Molinaro but I still prefer the English remake. I just loved Nathan Lane and Hank Azaria in their renditions of the patriarch's lover and maid, respectively. The films are almost identical in plot and storyline. Whatever you choose, you will laugh. La Cage aux Folles was nominated for Best Director, Costume and Adapted Screenplay at the 1980 Oscars.
