"In exuberant verse and stirring pictures, Patricia Hruby Powell and Christian Robinson create an extraordinary portrait of the passionate performer and civil rights advocate Josephine Baker, the woman who worked her way from the slums of St. Louis to the grandest stages in the world. Meticulously researched by both author and artist, Josephine's powerful story of struggle and triumph is an inspiration and a spectacle, just like the legend herself"--From the publisher's web site.

Opinion

From Library Staff

What's the Charleston? What's the Jazz Age?

An extraordinary portrait- the art is by the amazing Christian Robinson- of the passionate performer and civil rights advocate Josephine Baker.

Much like Josephine Baker herself, this biography is colorful, exuberant, and utterly fascinating.

Love childrens nonfiction ~ it provides the facts in short bites and there is a sense of accomplishment in finishing a short story! #wndb

Beautifully illustrated book about the iconic African-American actress/dancer/singer who made her reputation in Paris. Probably better for older kids, as some of her costumes and dances were a wee bit suggestive.
