Aside from Mindgame from Yuasa, I think Paprika is my favorite anime out there. You absolutely cannot pre judge this film to be like most anime's, as it is extremely unique, surreal, and psychedelic. I've never seen anything like this, especially not in the anime world. Brilliant, Satoshi Kon is truly a master artist. And yeah, this one is definitely not for young children. Don't get bogged down in trying to analyze it or finding a plot, just enjoy the ride.

Ordinarily, the first thing I look for in a film is the story, but that doesn't apply here. Like Inception and Strange Days, it's about technology that makes it possible to see and manage dreams, a murder -- and the rest is up for debate. But rather than trying too hard to understand it, let it wash over you and make its own kind of sense. Because of violence and brief sexual imagery, this is not a film for children, though they might actually be the best audience for Paprika's bombardment of images. I have attached a video about writer/director Satoshi Kon's films, which will give you an idea if it is for you.

Fantastic example of how good and unique animation could be. I love all movies of Satoshi Kon. They pushed the boundaries of what anime could be for me.

A fascinating, dizzying, phantasmagorical, dream-film! Gilliam-esque on Gilliam flavoured steroids! Even the music is great (especially the main theme music). There is a maze of allegory within symbols within symbols within allegories... and so on. I should recommend that one set the language preferences to English rather than simply add the subtitles (the subtitles are a significant distraction for this film).

one of THE BEST anime films ever. (in MY top 10 at least) consider it a "dark fantasy/sci-fi" movie

it's an adult movie, as mentioned, and is loaded with a lot of japanese style surrealism with one torture scene featuring anime style "gore" though not of the blood & guts variety, but it is also very beautifully animated as satoshi kon's films (also check out tokyo godfathers, memories, paranoia agent (series) & even rojin-z... millenium actress & perfect blue are supposed to be very good too) rival miyazaki's films, though they're aimed more at adults, particularly the paranoia agent series which is a good followup to paprika if you like that.

if you start watching SK films, keep your eyes peeled for characters in all of his previous films to make passing cameos in other films.

I will say that this one while it is good Anime in my opinion this one is not for younger children. I say that due to the violence in it. Said violence sort of takes on a dream -like quality, but it also seems to suggest Suicide and involves a main character. I will also say that the machine itself is another reason that I agree with the rating of this movie. They rated it "R". I will also sya that his other works were more beautiful.

After being exposed to Miyazaki films, I had been anxious to see other fantastical anime like Paprika. There is an unfortunate stereotype of anime being "all the same," "childish," and so on. Paprika definitely challenges this. It was beautifully artistic; I felt like I never had enough time for each shot to take in all of the imagery. Like other reviewers, the film really was brilliant at capturing the feel of dreams. I really felt like I could immediately connect with the characters, especially Konakawa, Paprika, and Shima. I also found myself thinking about dream/reality distinctions, the challenges and benefits of the spread of science and technology, and Jungian ideas about the collective unconscious. At times, I felt like the plot did become a little too nonsensical with unfinished story arcs. However, I suppose that may have been the point? Dreams are to be interpreted, not explained to you. Overall, a great film!

This movie is visually amazing, wondrous and made me feel as if I was actually dreaming (it captured the odd certainty people have in dreams when dreams shift or change or nonsense details are reported as if they are common knowledge). The animation is amazing and detailed, the characters are not flat and one dimensional like so many anime movies and the music was whimsical and charming. I had an incredibly strong sense of deja vu while watching this, probably because it captured the essence of dreams so well, but it was also a spiritual movie in many ways, making the viewer question their concepts and the limits of reality, consciousness, free will, the power of thought to physically manifest. This is one of my favourite animes, along with Akira, Spirited Away and Tekkonkinkreet.

Characters are excellent and the plot is very direct (but there are some good twists and turns) and the pervasive dream element keeps you off balance trying to figure out not only who did it, but what is really going on (is it a dream or real?). In the end it all gets resolved nicely. Besides great characters and story, the visuals are powerful and interesting.

The movie is rated R due to a few scenes of gun violence and nudity. The nudity scenes are not sexual nor lewd. The visuals are stunning. The story is good. It is about human psyche and sharing dreams using a machine called DC mini. I am curious if the movie inception stole some ideas from this movie. It is an animation masterpiece.
