Texas cowboy Ron Woodroof's free-wheeling life was overturned in 1985 when he was diagnosed as HIV-positive. Shunned and ostracized by many old friends and bereft of government-approved medicines, he decided to take matters in his own hands, tracking down alternative treatments from all over the world by means both legal and illegal. Bypassing the establishment, he joined forces with an unlikely band of renegades and outcasts and established a hugely successful "buyers' club."

Tough guy, but wanted to help others.

What Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto went through (physically) for this film is astounding.
Plus: Trust the reviews. This may be McConaughey's best performance.
It is an amazingly well done movie.

The first scene of this movie is two character having intercourse in an animal stall. I should have stopped watching then. It got worse. Sorry I did not see the warning online, but I picked this off the shelf because it was highly rated. I did not enjoy the story because it was so offensive.

The film is a compelling drama that shows talented performers doing their best. The only thing that keeps it from being truly perfect or something close is the fact that the movie centers around real people yet real events and important details showing the bigger context get glossed over. For example, the protagonist is shown being a homophobic and racist bigot before his HIV diagnosis; this was made up for the film's dramatic arc, with the real guy being a decent person throughout his life. Still, the movie is well worth watching, with these caveats.

A very good movie with great acting. Honest, rough, tender.

Phenomenal. Moving. Brilliant. Beautiful. These words don't even scratch the surface. This is the true story of Ron Woodroof who received a surprise HIV diagnosis in 1985 and what he decided to do with the rest of his life upon learning that he only had thirty days left. Before DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, I'd never heard of the director Jean-Pierre Valle, but after this film, I will certainly keep an eye out for him. The sheer force of personality here, with Ron and Rayon and everybody else for that matter, makes this heartbreaking tale somehow feel lighter, and thus more entertaining without losing track of the gravity of the situation. These are people, don't forget, not robots, not archetypes, so the humour of just being human is blended so well into the story. I found it fascinating and emotionally raw and beautiful and ugly and funny and sorrowful. Both Oscar wins for Matthew and Jared were well deserved; their performances never missed a beat. I definitely recommend DALLAS BUYERS CLUB to pretty much everyone.

Good movie, bad subject matter...but I guess that can't be helped. Matthew M. was great as the guy who wouldn't take no for an answer.

One of the more honest depictions about those afflicted with AIDS and HIV. This movie ranks up there with Philadelphia.

Other: Cocaine, heroin, and other drug use are shown; alcohol is consumed and cigarettes smoked.

britprincess1ajax Aug 07, 2017

Violence: A fistfight between two men lasts for three punches in quick succession. A man's damaged leg in an accident with heavy machinery is also covered in blood. Both of these scenes are very brief and violence is not a concern in this film.

britprincess1ajax Aug 07, 2017

Frightening or Intense Scenes: There are a few angry outbursts and suffering is consistent throughout the film. The subject matter itself (as well as McConaughey's transformation for the role) may cause viewers to feel uncomfortable.

Sexual Content: Sex is shown, but not graphic and never seen directly. However, male buttocks are shown briefly, as well as several glimpses of female breasts and buttocks.

britprincess1ajax Aug 07, 2017

Coarse Language: A variety of slurs and about 100 utterances of the f-word are used. The language is vulgar, but there's a purpose to this use of language; it's not used just for the sake of being crude.
