Your Deceptive Mind

A Scientific Guide to Critical Thinking Skills

What should you think? Who should you believe? Could you be deceiving yourself? These are questions that all critical thinkers of any age must constantly ask themselves. There is no more important skill in today's world than being able to think about, understand, and act on information in a way that is both effective and responsible. Critical thinking transforms you from a passive member of society into an active participant in the ideas and issues of the day. It empowers one to better understand nearly every single aspect of everyday life, from health and nutrition to science and technology to philosophical and spiritual belief systems. Our brains, according to Dr. Novella, are our greatest strength as critical thinkers. But they can also be the source of many weaknesses and impairments in critical thought. Your Deceptive Mind, takes a closer look at the neuroscientific details of critical thinking and how the (often unfamiliar) ways in which our brains are hardwired can distract and prevent us from getting to the truth of a particular matter.

When I picked up this DVD I was not aware that it was a product of The Teaching Company. Nothing put out by this company should be on the shelves of a public library. Steven Novella is a joke and does not really know or understand science. He makes money being a skeptic and appearing on comedy shows and creating games and organizations that he leads. He is currrently being sued for false and misleading statements. He is a a quack, he may have a medical degree but is a dangerous person when someone goes to his books, games and DVD's for information. He does not understand how the brain and mind work. He does not understand critical thinking and was not even able to explain emotional intelligence in this DVD. He seems to not know the basics of how the brain functions.

This type of nonsense is true about most everything put out by The Teaching Company. I know beccause I made the mistake of buying several of ther videos a few years ago on a variety of topics.

Library staff, please do some research on this and remove everything put put by this company. I understand that we need access to all points of view, but the Teaching Company makes a mockery of intelligence and appears to only offer intentional false information.
