one of my favorite movies from one of my favorite movie making countries. didn't think anyone still made films this way. it works very much like a book, in the sense that there is minimal dialogue & not everything is explained to you. as such, you have to use your brain to connect the dots. isn't that why we love movies?

How deeply do people ponder the decision some make to, for example, take vows as a nun? We might equally wonder why some would commit to serve any ideology. It is the work of this drama to answer this question as it pertains to the two characters who reveal themselves here.
Ida particularly fascinates. She brings her intelligence and courage to the task of making her choice.

I wish there were more of this director's films in the catalog.
It is a well crafted film. The B&W format is ideally suited.

This film did not go where I expected, and for that it should be lauded. But I have to admit, I was not much moved where it did go. Cinematically well done, but lacks drama and characterization of the main protagonists.

Beautiful film from this immensely talented director. Exquisite camera work and scenery. The script is spare and economical, this story is told with few words carefully chosen. Yet the characters come through powerfully. Highly recommended for fans of innovative film work. Director of My Summer Of Love, a stunner of a movie with a young fiery Emily Blunt.

After seeing Cold War in the theater, several friends mentioned that they enjoyed Ida more. I was happy to see it available through booth Hoopla and Kanopy. The story and characters are more developed. The cinematography is as stunning as Cold War. Both are shot in black and white. Joanna Kulig, the singer, is in both movies, although her singing is better in Cold War.

Another Pawlikowski movie, The Woman in the Fifth, is also available for streaming through Hoopla. It was the first Pawlikowski movie I'd seen, and couldn't finish watching.

First of all anyone concerned about lack of spoiler alerts should stay away from these comments prior to watching a movie. If the viewer is curious regards the contents of movies such as "Ida" then there are many sites dedicated to giving outlines and critical ratings. As for those who panned "Ida" below I suggest you have gorged your brains on a relentless diet of American efforts which far too often value action and obviousness over character portrayal. "Ida" receives two thumbs up from a fan of foreign movies particularly those in black and white.

Like the director of the movie, I also left Poland at the age of 14. I was eager to watch it with my family, but I am glad that only my American-born husband and I wasted our time doing so.

We found the movie boring, shallow, undeveloped, with not much of scenery, containing sparse dialogue, many close-ups of internally conflicted characters, and scenery that could have been taken from any European country.

The movie left me wonder about the sanity of the director and what motivated him to create a movie about a topic, which he obviously had little, if any, knowledge about. In my opinion, the movie is a great disappointment and time waster.

One of the most beautifully shot films I've seen in a very long time.

Wonderful, hauntingly beautiful movie. For those of us familiar with history of Poland and her people the story line captured the stoic and yet hopeful heart. The grey/white of film as well as numerous silent moments gives viewers time to get in touch with emotions within oneself in a serene setting. Time well spent. Some viewers will get it, others not.

-We're off to Gdansk to do some gigs. Wanna come? Ever been to the seaside?
Ida: I haven't been anywhere.

-Come along, then...You'll listen to us play, we'll walk on the beach.
Ida: And then?

-Then we'll buy a dog...Get married, have children...Get a house.
Ida: And then?

-The usual. Life.
