"For forty years Charles Alavoine has sleepwalked through his life. Growing up as a good boy in the grip of a domineering mother, he trains as a doctor, marries, opens a medical practice in a quiet country town, and settles into an existence of impeccable bourgeois conformity. And yet at unguarded moments this model family man is haunted by a sense of emptiness and futility. Then, one night, laden with Christmas presents, he meets Martine. It is time for the sleeper to awake."--P. [4] of cover.

Excellent flowing prose and profile of a complex criminal psyche. A picture of a different post WWII generation and a different attitude towards women and family obligations. Dr. A feels he is owed freedom and happiness despite poor decisions he has made over his lifetime. He seems to be in an S&M relationship with his mistress, I am not sure why he feels he must kill her. But the novel is constructed around the condemned man's letter to a Judge to explain why his life was so dull that he had to commit this act of passion. I will certainly look for other books by this author.
