overall, a disappointment.

Nowhere near as good as what I expected, The plot is a little bizzare and the acting pretty stiff, but if you have time to kill it just might suit your taste.

There is very little plot and the screen writing is insipid. Wilder is excessive with glamorous shots, probably to take up film space. The denouement takes up last 1/3rd of the film, characters standing and conversing. Quite boring. This must be Holden's worst performance. Not his type of role. As for acting, he primarily walks from scene to scene. Embarrassingly dull movie.

In 1950, Billy Wilder and William Holden would make their masterpiece Sunset Blvd, a story about a pathetic aging actress. In 1978 they were reunited to make this film Fedora about another acting actress (a fantasy of what could have happened to Greta Garbo?). This one is good, but not anywhere near great. It has a decent enough mystery of why Fedora became a recluse and a short exploration of the importance of one having their own unique identity (see the Jake Gyllenhaal film Enemy for another exploration of identity). Holden is prematurely aged in this film, most likely because of his long struggle with alcoholism. He seems much older than his late 50’s.

Perhaps it was the dated mid '70s feel, I don't know, but this drama from the great Billy Wilder was rather uninspired and underwhelming to me.
