Widowed at forty, with four children and not enough money, Nora has lost the love of her life, Maurice, the man who rescued her from the stifling world to which she was born. And now she fears she may be drawn back into it. Wounded, strong-willed, clinging to secrecy in a tiny community where everyone knows your business, Nora is drowning in her own sorrow and blind to the suffering of her young sons, who have lost their father. Yet she has moments of stunning empathy and kindness.

I enjoyed the audio of this book. It's lyrical and the story flows well.
This is a quiet book of a young widow coming to terms with her grief and trying to find a way to a new life without a partner. I enjoyed both the writing style and the story.
There are times when Nora is quite removed from the events in her life, it seems. She is close to her kids and her love shows through but there are specific situations where she seems detached when a parent would usually step in quickly.
However, Nora grows on the reader as she struggles with her demons and fears.
All in all, the book flowed well except for one section that seems quite out of place and that still seems like part of another storyline.
I like Colm Toibin's style and will look into other books by him.
