I would have given more stars if I could only understand what was going on. Very interesting movie but very hard to follow.
I watched this film almost a year ago, rated it highly but did not comment. I have thought about this movie many times, replaying scenes in my mind. I am still totally intrigued by the whole story and the wonderful job the director and the actors did. Sarah Snook, actress from Australia, is utterly fantastic. I managed to find a few more films/minis she was in, and, she is no fluke. I'm an old Heinlein fan so this is a treat to me for that reason as well.
Not your regular Hollywood fluff, and not to be watched with friends who like to talk while the movie's playing.
In this time travel themed movie, pay close attention to the births and deaths of the 2 main characters.
If I go for a second viewing on this one, I think I might take notes!
It is nice to come across the occasional movie that requires some intellect to get the most out of it, however. :-)
This movie is a high concept sci fi film about self congratulatory virgin birth.
I like Ethan Hawke as an actor. I think he’s believable and plays off beat films. I’m leery when it’s “directed, written, starring, produced by…..but this was based on Robert Heinlein’s short story, so Michael Spiergig and Peter Spierig writing and directing it turned out ok, because they just adapted it. I liked it. Got lost in the middle, confused towards the end, and then it vaguely makes sense. Not sure if it’s a thriller or a mystery. Thought provoking.
This was an interesting idea and for the first hour was masterfully played out. For me though, as most problems with time-travel films, there are continuity problems that become complicated, if not impossible. I got lost near the end with the implausible aspects of time-travel implications, or lack of them.
Some aspects of the repeating story of 2012 film, Looper, and the 1981 The Terminator, are used here, but as this was based upon a 1961 story by Robert A Heinlein, this was obviously an earlier story.
Great performances by Ethan Hawke (various quality films) and Sarah Snook (most recently, the 2018 Winchester and 2017 The Glass Castle)
Directed by Michael and Peter Spierig in 2014 based on the short story "All You Zombies" by Robert A. Heinlein, this Australian SF thriller depicts an entrancingly strange time-travel saga while you remain puzzled whenever twists and turns keep multiplying well beyond the point of reaching your understanding.
Superb are the performances of the major actors.
Quite interesting is the idea of transgender or intersex in the main character.
Although it seems complicated and sophisticated, it turns out to be a fascinatingly and intriguingly entertaining piece you would love to the hilt.
Interesting concept and very well directed with a great performance by Ethan Hawke. Only complaint is that it is a bit predictable where they're bringing the story at times and it tends to drag on a bit more than needed.
Really nicely done - great acting and special effects (it's worth watching the behind the scenes stuff to get an idea of how much work went into the makeup, FX, and the like). Don't think too hard about the plot, though! If you're looking for a great companion piece to this movie, check out Primer (but be prepared to rewatch or read up on that one for how everything works).
***SPOILERS***
This incredibly heart-wrenching movie isn't from the sad backstory of Jane Doe to John Doe but realizing that everything would happen over and over again in a loop, a snake eating its own tail. This follows the convoluted life of a time travelling agent and how she created herself and interacts with herself. Jane was raised in a girls orphanage not knowing her own parents. She has quite the pretentious attitude because she's better than most of her peers and even the boys, both physically and mentally. But in her time women weren't allowed to become astronauts, which was upsetting for Jane but it didn't stop her. During the lengthy examinations, Jane excelled in her work but one day she was defending herself against one of the girls who wanted to fight with her and despite acting in self-defence she was discharged. Soon after Jane starts working as a housemaid and continues her studies in university. Soon she meets a boy and they fall in love. Eventually, she became pregnant. The baby was delivered healthy, but doctors noticed something strange about Jane's body. She had to get her female reproducing organs removed, and had male organs instead. Soon she had to transition into a male with multiple surgeries and had to take testosterone to get a deeper voice but she still had to practice on how to act like a man. Jane changed her name to John and named her baby Jane. In the hospital the baby was kidnapped, by a time traveller (who the next future John) and put into a girl orphanage 20 years in the past. John eventually got a job as a dishwasher, then tried applying again for the space travel, but they saw her as unfit. John tells her life's story to a bartender who she later finds out is a time travelling agent. He has her join and tells her that she could kill the boy who she fell in love with and get away with it. So when John goes to find the boy she bumps into her younger self and they fall in love, and the whole cycle repeats itself again, into an endless loop. I recommend anyone to at least watch this movie twice to spot anything you might have missed, this truly is a masterpiece.
