Nancy Mitford was a formidable author whose work has withstood the test of time, and is as fresh and funny as it was decades ago. This extract from Zoe Heller's introduction to the 2010 edition of this novel is a great piece on her enduring genius. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/books/7398341/Zoe-Heller-on-Nancy-Mitford.html

A portrait of the British aristocracy in the inter-war period. Witty with serious overtones.

As sharp and crisp as it was 50 years ago. If you like Jane Austen, you'll appreciate Nancy Mitford.

I liked the chatty tone and the eccentric characters. I hope to eventually read the others in the series.

Two tales of young British aristocratic girls who find love but later discover it was only a mirage. It's saved from being too sad by a collection of colorful and comic characters. Both novels are narrated by the same character who has more down-to-earth ideas of falling in love than her two hapless friends.

A bittersweet story striking just the right tone. Very enjoyable read.

The Radletts were always either on a peak of happiness or drowning in black waters of despair; their emotions were on no ordinary plane, they loved or they loathed, they laughed or they cried, they lived in a world of superlatives.
