Nancy Mitford was a formidable author whose work has withstood the test of time, and is as fresh and funny as it was decades ago. This extract from Zoe Heller's introduction to the 2010 edition of this novel is a great piece on her enduring genius. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/books/7398341/Zoe-Heller-on-Nancy-Mitford.html

A portrait of the British aristocracy in the inter-war period. Witty with serious overtones.

The front and back covers seem to portray the story as a frivolous comedy, but I thought it was a tragedy, with humourous touches. It is good British writing and I agreed with the reader who said that if you like Jane Austen, you'd like this.

As sharp and crisp as it was 50 years ago. If you like Jane Austen, you'll appreciate Nancy Mitford.

I liked the chatty tone and the eccentric characters. I hope to eventually read the others in the series.

A bittersweet story striking just the right tone. Very enjoyable read.
