Paul Newman classic! A decorated war veteran turns to petty crime/mischief and ends up on the chain gang in some Southern prison. Paul Newman is excellent in this film and there are several memorable scenes - especially the egg eating contest! Great group of actors; George Kennedy (won best supporting actor academy award), Harry Dean Stanton, Ralph Waite and Dennis Hopper, but Newman is the star. As someone in the bonus extras says the story is about an alienated man who becomes an existential hero - great summary. Cool Hand Luke never quits or gives up, he inspires and invigorates his fellow prisoners. He frustrates his prison "bosses" and there is always a "failure to communicate." Great film if you have never seen it and even better if it has been a long while since you've seen it.

One of the films this country should be proud about. Excellent and timeless! Be sure to also indulge in the special features on the disc - the commentary by historian/Newman biographer Eric Lax and a documentary, "A Natural-Born World-Shaker: Making Cool Hand Luke".

Do you know (and, do you care?) that this highly-praised "Rebel-Without-A-Cause" prison picture is actually a little Bible story in disguise? - It's true! ~~~ With deliberate intent, director Stuart Rosenberg saw to it that throughout the story Paul Newman's Lucas Jackson character was viewed as being something of an anti-hero saint who first wins over his fellow man and, then, is ultimately crucified. ~~~ Personally, I found this whole "Paul-Newman-as-a-Christ-figure" angle to be very unwelcome. I thought that Lucas was nothing but an apathetic, selfish loser who deserved to go to prison for foolishly cutting the heads off of dozens of parking meters. ~~~ Yes. I am quite aware that Cool Hand Luke is considered by many to be a glowing gem of classic, American film-making of the 1960s. But, hey, that certainly wasn't the way it struck me. ~~~ Containing what seemed like endless "filler" scenes, this picture appeared to be more interested in giving the viewer yet another opportunity to admire Paul Newman's baby-blue eyes, than it did about saying anything of any relevance. If you ask me, it all seemed as pretentious as a plastic crucifix.

One of the Top 10 Movies Ever Made is how I vote "Cool Hand Luke". Paul Newman is "Cool" as they come. This is a Movie Classic. See it to believe it!

A pretty interesting film, from the prisoners' perspective quite fair, and it has one of the more interesting scenes in any film when it shows the inmates on a chain gang watching a woman washing her car.

"What we have here is... failure to communicate." Who can forget that classic line from Strother Martin in one of my all time favorite films. Paul Newman shines in a fascinating story of a war hero turned small town loser who is busted for breaking into parking meters and sent to a work farm. George Kennedy won an Oscar for best supporting actor as "Drag Line," the prisoner boss of the camp who over time not only warms up to Luke, but begins to look up to him. Look for other supporting cast members like Dennis Hopper, Ralph Waite, Richard Benjamin, Harry Dean Stanton and others. This is a great film.

Could watch over and over, my only complaint is the audio track on Blu-ray in single channel.
