A would-be cult film that was writer/director Clive Barker's unsuccessful follow up to "Hellraiser." The studio didn't really understand or like the film, so they cut it and didn't promote it well. This is a new director's cut that restores some footage. The dude from "A River Runs Through It" (not Brad Pitt) is having some messed up dreams and thinks he might be a killer, and his creepy shrink (director David Cronenberg) isn't helping. He's shot by the police and becomes part of a monster community (Nightbreed!) who are hunted by humans. It's a bit incoherent, but it has a weird, occult vibe, some cool visuals, and an over the top monsters v. humans finale. The twist? The real monsters are the humans! Cronenberg is one of my favorite directors and he's actually quite a good actor. Music by Danny Elfman, who also did the scores for "Batman" and "Dick Tracy" around the same time. I think this is better than "Hellraiser."
