Society girls from New York City circa 1890, Dacia and Lou never desired to know more about their lineage, instead preferring to gossip about the mysterious Romanian family that they barely knew. But upon turning seventeen, the girls must return to their homeland to meet their relatives, find proper husbands, and most terrifyingly learn the deep family secrets of The Claw, The Wing, and The Smoke. The Florescus, after all, are shape-shifters, and it is time for Dacia and Lou to fulfill the prophecy that demands their acceptance of this fate . . . or fight against this cruel inheritance with all their might. With a gorgeous Romanian setting, stunning Parisian gowns, and dark brooding young men, readers will be swept up by this epic adventure of two girls in a battle for their lives.

This is a cleverly written story of mystery, intrigue, history, and manners. Dacia and Lou are cousins that are as close as sisters and yet different as night and day. Their story is written between each girl's point of view with each chapter beginning with a personal letter or journal entry that sets the tone for their adventures. The girls' journey through Europe to their ancestral Romanian home is punctuated with mysterious encounters, strange incidents, and an ever growing sense of danger. When they finally learn the truth of their birthright, both girls must use their wits and new found powers to defy their history and create their own destiny.
Oh, and also find true love of course!

it was a really goood story but it was kinda inappropriate, just thought you should know. but for some thats what we need to spice it up!

I was reluctant to read this book, (the cover looked scary, I know, I'm a wimp) but NEVER judge a book by it's cover! It's not scary, it's a great book!

This novel surprises in its literary style and its plot twists. It deals primarily with two budding society girls in the 1800s, each one ready to travel, see their roots and perhaps snag a rich and eligible bachelor for a husband. The characters of each girl is sharply delineated, both unique and utterly different and yet fiercely devoted to each other. Apart from their interest in men, the girls show a loyalty to each other that is wonderful to read. If this were a movie, it would pass the Bechdel test with flying colors.

These are two girls with a destiny but who seek to defy tradition and a potent fate that has been predicted for their family. Screw prophecy; these ladies are determined to make their own fates and the unfolding of the mutual adventure becomes a fast-paced thrill as they break out of their molds and their own pre-conditioned mindsets.

It’s a treat to read about adventure stories that place the emphasis on women with friendships that define them rather than love affairs that consume their attention (there are love interests here as well but they might as well be peripheral to the action).

However, having become jaded about vampire novels, I was suspicious about the turn this book seemed ready to take. Are there vampires in this book? Not quite. The inclusion of the family Dracul is meant to provide a theme to this tale but it’s not what you think. I won’t tell more because that would spoil the surprise. Suffice to say, that Ms. George has managed to provide her own original spin on that well-worn mythos.

Even though it promises to be a series, I think this novel could stand very well on its own. It’s a rousing cry to ladies who dare to take the reins and will be of interest to women and men alike.

This was the book I wanted at the right time! A wonderful historical fiction set in late victorian Romania about two cousins who find out their family is not what it seems.

I really enjoyed the strong female characters and the scenery described. It was a bit slow to start, but once I got into it, I couldn't put it down!

I just could not get into the story. It jumped around too much.

A really wonderful story rife with adventure, romance, and gorgeous dresses about two girls who seriously don't know what's going on with their aunt. As always with Jessica Day George, it is extremely satisfying and a very quick read. Take an afternoon and just lay on the couch to delight in Dacia and Lou's adventures!
