[ Ira, with tears in his eyes, pours his heart out to Ruth, who's about to walk out on him. ]
Ira: "I just need to say something...I need to say something. You know I fell in love with you the first time I saw you. You're just the most amazing, beautiful girl I've ever met, and somehow...I don't know...somehow you chose me. But how I loved you then it's...God... it's nothing compared to how I love you now. And I love you with everything inside me. I think you should go. You see, I love you so much; I just want you to be happy, even if that happiness no longer includes me."
[ Ira and Ruth tearfully embrace and kiss. She leaves. And the scene flashes forward to the present day, where an older Ira is recounting to Sophia the events of the past, while she sits at his bedside. ]
Ira: [to Sophia] "Love requires sacrifice...always."
[In a flashback to May, 25, 1940; Ira walks Ruth home from the synagogue.]
Ruth: "You know, sometimes I think ...What right do I have to be happy when there's so much suffering in the world?"
Ira: "I guess you could say...What right do you have to be unhappy?"
Ruth: "True! You know for a country pumpkin, you're quite philosophical."
[ Ira laughs at being called "a country pumpkin". ]
Ira: "It's a country bumpkin, not a country pumpkin."
Ira: "I think I prefer the way you said it."
