pretty much a favorite movie, is different but is beautiful at the same time funny and real!

What's Dogfight about? Oh, about war and friendship, women and beauty, music and true love. It was written by a real-life Marine veteran, partly as an apology to the women he hurt, while all the time being a good guy. The dialogue walks the fine line between wit and realism. What might have been between Lili Taylor and River Phoenix, both in the movie and in real life, had me in tears. BONUS: Lili smacking the Schlitz out of River, who really deserves it.

I hadn't heard of this overlooked 'sleeper' until my favorite librarian :) recommended it to me. River Phoenix gives a fine performance, but I was blown away by Lili Taylor. Best thing I've seen her in. The script is sweet (loved the music room sequence) and funny (toothless girl, the 'accursed' dinner, etc.) and just completely engaging. Truly a wonderful movie about the end of innocence ~ not only for two young people in the '60s, but the country itself (and the world, I suppose) in only a few short years. To quote Bob Dylan: "The times, they are a-changin'..." FIVE STARS.

Eddie: "...People are such goddamn idiots." Rose: "I know they are! But what, what is the point of spending all your time and energy trying to get even with everybody that makes you angry?" Eddie: "Because it feels great, that's why. It feels f*cking great. Especially when there's an @sshole-" Rose: "And what is the point of every word that comes out of your mouth being a curse word?" Waiter: "Well, are you ready to order now, or...?" Eddie: "No." Rose: "Yes, goddammit. I'm going to have the... the, the f*cking poached salmon, with the... son-of-a-bitching rice, and a... and a, and a dirty bastard salad, with a... with a sh*tload of Roquefort dressing. Thank you. And um, who knows what this @sshole wants." Eddie: "Uh... I'll, I'll just take a f*cking beer." Rose: "Thank you."
