Add a CommentThe tale brings a compact history of Crazy Horse and the Lakota to life for a young reader. As an adult, it's hard to get past how the characters are simply talking boxes and it won't add much if you already know the story. As a child, you should be prepared for the scale of death that comes with Native American history in the mid 1800's.
A good piece of accessible history with a few misgivings.
Educational and easy read.
The oral storytelling tradition of the Lakota people shines through when a boy and his grandfather visit locations important to Crazy Horse.
I had my 11 & 13 year old boys read this book for our spring break trip out west. It's a wonderful book & very easy to read! It's written from the perspective of the grandson wanting to know about his culture. The grandfather gives the Lakota version & it is really a GREAT story!
Marshall presents the complex history often left out of textbooks without any hero-worship or good guys vs. bad guys in an engaging and believable storytelling format. A glossary makes the text more accessible to younger readers.
