"The extraordinary new novel in the New York Times-bestselling author's acclaimed series about the real Deep South--"a joy ride into the heart of darkness" (The Washington Post). She was just seventeen, a high school dropout named Milly Jones, found walking down the middle of the highway, engulfed in flames. Even in a tough Mississippi county like Tibbehah, it shatters the community, and it is up to Sheriff Quinn Colson, back on the job after a year away, and his deputy Lillie Virgil, to investigate what happened and why. Before long, however, accusations start to fly, national media and federal authorities descend, and what seemed like a senseless act of violence begins to appear like something even more disturbing--with more victims waiting in the shadows"-- Provided by publisher.
When the investigation into Milly Jones' brutal death begins to look like more than a senseless act of violence, Sheriff Quinn Colson and his deputy, Lillie Virgil, must contend with the national media and federal authorities interfering.

I enjoy all things Southern so this was fun to read. The characters were well drawn and the beginning of the plot compelling. I found that the solution to the mystery was too evident, however, and the book fizzled out in the end. Disappointing, but I would recommend it anyway for a light read.

Another good read by Ace Atkins. I found this book focused a bit more on sheriff Lillie Virgil. I like the character of Lillie. Also an introduction of a new character Fannie Hathcock. I love the colorful language of the characters in these Quinn Colson novels. Those that enjoyed the previous books will love this one. I look forward to the next Qinn Colson novel. Also try the Nick Travers Graphic Novel "Last Fair Deal Gone Down" that just released recently.

I agree with the reviewer that this was somewhat disappointing. The plot does move along quickly with Quinn and Lillie searching for Milly's killer. It came to an abrupt ending and an event that would appear to set the stage for the next Quinn Colson novel.
