This slasher/horror film basically teaches you to always trust your instincts. Michael returns home from military camp only to discover that his mom has a new boyfriend, but he decides to go with it because she seems pretty happy. But, the longer that he is home the more he notices the strange things that his new step father does and how he might possibly be a serial killer. This movie definitely did a pretty good job at building suspense and tension, and at trying to create real multi dimensional characters. A lot of the scenes were boring and missed that slasher effect that you would hope for, but I wouldn’t say it’s a terrible film. I would rate this movie 2.5/5 stars. @The_Reviewer of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board

Though it seems like a routine b-picture, "The Stepfather" stands out from many of the other slasher films of the 80s by virtue of its acting (Terry O'Quinn of "Lost" fame is particularly creepy) and its subtle critique of the family values of the Reagan era. Paved the way for the many fill-in-the-blank (roommate, cop, babysitter) from hell movies of the 90s ("Cape Fear," "Single White Female," "Unlawful Entry"). Followed by a sequel and a remake.

This is one of my all time favorite thrillers to emerge from the 1980's. The acting is great for this type of movie, and the story is tons of fun. I would recommend this to fans of thrillers.

A family-values man named Jerry Blake marries widows and divorcées with children in search of the perfect family. As soon as his new family members show signs of being human and not robots who will march unquestioningly to his tune, his dreams of domestic bliss begin to crumble, and he kills them. Then he alters his appearance, assumes a new identity, and skips to another town to begin the deadly ritual all over again. He marries Susan Maine, who sees him as the ideal surrogate father for her teenage daughter Stephanie, and he is soon up to his old tricks when she proves to be too much of a troublesome teen to handle.
