A fictional account of the life and death of Thomas Francis Meagher (1823-1867), an Irishman who opposed the British regime, was exiled to Tasmania, fled to the United States, and became a brigadier general in the Union Army during the Civil War, before serving for a year as acting governor of the Montana Territory. He died accidentally after falling from a boat into the Missouri River.--Adapted from Stewart Sifakis, Who Was Who in the Civil War, excerpt reprinted in this volume.
